Guidance

Development of guidance for management of pesticide poisoning in low and middle-income countries.

The emergency management of poisoned patients is a long-neglected subject, exacerbated by the large number of poisons and toxins present in the environment.

There is clear guidance from international toxicology societies and high-income countries on how to treat poisoned patients. However, this may be inappropriate in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), due to local factors.

What are we doing?

With support from the World Health Organisation, we are developing globally relevant LMIC guidance for emergency management of pesticide poisoning.

The guidance is being developed in collaboration with national ministries of health, professional healthcare worker organisations, toxicology societies and Médecins Sans Frontières.

High-quality guidance will help doctors distinguish low-toxicity exposures requiring supportive care from more severe poisoning. This will improve practice and outcomes for patients.
