Heart disease is Scotland’s single biggest killer, but it doesn’t have to be! We are a group of masters and PhD students, many of us on BHF funded studentships. Therefore, we understand the need to raise money to help fund the research happening here in our Centre for Cardiovascular Science. We do this by holding fundraising events, sponsorships, and donations as well as getting involved in public outreach to talk to people about our science. We had an amazingly successful two years as a fundraising group, managing to raise close to £5000.  During this time, we have received two BHF awards including the BHF Scotland ‘New Fundraising Group of the Year’ award and a BHF Heart Hero award for one of our members! We have held multiple bake sales within the QMRI, organised pub quizzes, and ended each year with a bang at our annual fundraising Ceilidh.

Many members of the group are involved in the BHF Schools Outreach Programme, which has now rolled out to all major cities in Scotland. With this programme, we have taught CPR to over 100 school students and taught them the importance of heart health. We also got involved with larger BHF events including the Science and Cinema night, the Meadows Festival and the Science Festival to get the word out about the research here in Edinburgh. Hopefully we can keep up this fantastic work next year!

Previous Events

In previous years we have participated in the Edinburgh Kiltwalk, the Edinburgh Marathon, science festivals, have hosted several ceilidhs, and have organised regular bake sales.
