BHF Centres

The Centre for Cardiovascular Science (CVS) was established as one of Edinburgh's first multidisciplinary research centres in 2000, following the award of Wellcome Trust Cardiovascular Research Initiative funding (£7M over 7 years). CVS evolved from a 'centre without walls' (with groups spread over multiple campuses) to the integrated research centre that has occupied a floor of the Queen's Medical Research Institute (QMRI) since 2005, as a result of its further successes in a series of competitions for strategic investment, notably from the British Heart Foundation (BHF). In 2008, CVS was designated as one the four BHF Centres of Research Excellence through the award of £7.6M over six years. With these awards, now totalling >£25M, CVS has established core facilities and training programmes, cemented strategic links with external collaborating institutions and continues to expand its capabilities and membership.

Translational research at CVS is supported and enhanced by the BHF Centre for Research Excellence and the BHF Centre for Vascular Regeneration.
