Research Ethics and Integrity

The University of Edinburgh has a commitment to promote and facilitate the ethical conduct of research. Attention to the ethical and legal implications of research for researchers, research subjects, sponsors and collaborators is an intrinsic part of good research practice.

Research carried out by CVS staff or students relating to human participants, their data or tissues, is subject to ethics and governance oversight from The Academic and Clinical Central Office for Research and Development (ACCORD) - a partnership between the University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian Health Board.  It aims to provide a single point of entry for researchers throughout the lifecycle of their studies and its aim is to ensure that the University meets clinical research governance and regulatory requirements, and fulfils legal, ethical and scientific obligations, whilst nurturing and attracting world class research.

Bioresearch & Veterinary Services are responsible for the housing, care and management of animals used in biomedical research at the University of Edinburgh, as well as the provision of Home Office, veterinary and technical support for our scientific staff to ensure high quality research, optimal animal welfare and compliance with all relevant legislation.

Research Misconduct

What is research misconduct?

“fabrication, falsification, plagiarism or deception in proposing, carrying out or reporting the results of research; deliberate, dangerous or negligent deviation from accepted practice or agreed protocols in carrying out research, and failure to avoid risk or harm to humans, animals used in research, and the environment where appropriate.” University Research Misconduct Policy, Page 1

Research misconduct should be reported to the Head of Centre, or Deputy Head of Centre in their absence.  An informal report of research misconduct can be made to the College via an online form
